A map of New Amsterdam in 1660 (NY History)

Then in 1811. It was graded and grid was put in place. Forever changing the organic nature of the streets, which was built when a small colony grew on the edge of the unknown. A wall fortified the settlement and wild pigs ran in the streets. The furthest streets at the time were Houston and Canal.
The grid plan which was devised had no parks or green spaces. The city was surveyed as far as Harlem. The grid plan was put in place in part due to a booming population and for the need to organize the city.
